The Making of a Papyrus
The Making of a Papyrus 2 John 1:12 ×

Most, if not all, of the New Testament books were written on stalks of pressed plants called papyrus, though some (parchments mentioned in 2 Tim 4:13) were on animals' skin, called vellum.

This plant is a very important plant for the ancient Egyptians for two main reasons.

First one, the stem of the plant looks like pyramidal shape or a triangular shape.

This is the symbol of the pyramid, symbol of eternity for the ancient Egyptians.

The second reason, the flowers of the plant will survive sun rays.

Sunray, symbol for the god of the sun.

As you can see inside the special, this is the sun.

This looks like the lotus flower from the papyrus plant, symbol for the god of the sun.

Now, I'm going to show you how to make the paper from this plant.

First, look at this stem according to the size we need.

Big or medium or small, for example, like this one.

We use the knife to remove the green part with the knife first.

This green part is very strong, not easy to cut this part.

So, the ancient Egyptian uses green part to make sandals, baskets, bags, coats, mats and so on.

Because it is very strong and not easy to cut it.

The most important part is the inner part, or the white part of the plant.

This is the most important part inside the plant, because we made the paper from the white part.

First, we are dividing it into fines and slices like this way.

These slices contain the amount of sugar and water that is easy to cut in, because this plant is one of the family's sugar cane, but not eat, not cook.

So easy to cut it like this way.

We need to reduce the amount of sugar on the water.

Therefore, we use this hammer to break the fibers.

Our husband and his wife use this hammer.

After that, you use the rolling pin to take the water with the sugar out of these slices.

Now, when the wife wanted to punish her husband, she used the rolling pin.

That's what I'm going for.

Why?

I never had to use it to make beads at home.

What was here to take the water with the sugar out?

I'm sorry.

Now, you can see the slices became very stronger, more flexible, like this way.

Not easy to cut it.

More flexible, but this one easy to cut in.

After that, we put the slices inside the water for six days.

After six days inside the water, the slices color turned into yellow color.

This is the main color of the papyrus plant.

To put this slices into water more than six days, it will be brown color.

So you can see this is a brown color for the papyrus plant.

More than six days in water, more darker than this color.

Then we arrange this slices between two pieces of carpets, one horizontal, one vertical, overlap to stick together, like this way.

One horizontal, one vertical, one horizontal.

After that, we'll put the filter under the press for another six days.

Of course, the ancient Egyptian doesn't use this press, so the ancient Egyptian used the big stones, rocks.

After six days under the press, we'll have the paper like this.

If you fancy the first paper like this way, very strong, not easy to cut it.

So you can see this is the original papyrus after 68.

Wow.

The ancient Egyptian uses the papyrus to write the stories and the clues.

So if you put the paper under the light, you can see the stems.

And you can see small brown spots.

That is the difference between the original papyrus and the fake one.

Because you can see some people outdoors sell papyrus, but not the original.

Because of course the papyrus, the fake papyrus, made banana leaves, but the original papyrus made a papyrus plant.

2 John 1 (WEB)

1The elder, to the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in truth, and not I only, but also all those who know the truth, 2for the truth’s sake, which remains in us, and it will be with us forever: 3Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

4I rejoice greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth, even as we have been commanded by the Father. 5Now I beg you, dear lady, not as though I wrote to you a new commandment, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another. 6This is love, that we should walk according to his commandments. This is the commandment, even as you heard from the beginning, that you should walk in it.

7For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who don’t confess that Jesus Christ came in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the Antichrist. 8Watch yourselves, that we don’t lose the things which we have accomplished, but that we receive a full reward. 9Whoever transgresses and doesn’t remain in the teaching of Christ doesn’t have God. He who remains in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10If anyone comes to you and doesn’t bring this teaching, don’t receive him into your house, and don’t welcome him, 11for he who welcomes him participates in his evil deeds.

12Having many things to write to you, I don’t want to do so with paper and ink, but I hope to come to you and to speak face to face, that our joy may be made full. 13The children of your chosen sister greet you. Amen.
