This word has a variety of meanings in the Old Testament. It is commonly used to describe a prophet’s inquiry of God, by both true prophets (e.g., Exod 18:15; 1 Kgs 22:7–8) and pagan diviners (e.g., Deut 18:11; 1 Sam 28:7). The word is also used in the sense of something that is required or demanded (cf. Gen 9:5; Mic 6:8). In Ezra 7:10, the term denotes the scribe’s diligent study of the law of Yahweh. In this verse, the word conveys the meaning of seeking God in the sense of true heartfelt worship and an obedient lifestyle.
