Key Verses | 1:11 “Therefore we also pray always for you that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness and the work of faith with power, that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.” 2:13-17 “But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle. Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace, comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work.” 3:10 “For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies. Now those who are such we command and exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ that they work in quietness and eat their own bread.” |
Key Events | Follow-up Report from Thessalonica Paul was prompted to send 2 Thessalonians by an unmentioned report from Thessalonica, speaking of continuing persecution and misunderstanding concerning the last days. |
Important Theology in 2 Thessalonians | |
---|---|
Predestination and Election | Paul says that God “from the beginning chose you for salvation” (2:13). This short statement is important in the realm of predestination and election because it shows God is the one choosing, and doing so prior to anything the believer does. |
The Last Days | Paul corrects the misunderstanding that ancient believers were living in the last days by describing the events that would signal the second coming. There will come a “falling away” and the revealing of “the man of sin…the son of perdition…the lawless one” (2:3, 8) before Christ comes. This “man of sin” will operate “according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish” (2:9-10). Those who do not “receive the love of the truth” will be sent a delusion by God. |
